Health & Safety for Learners

As a training provider we are required to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all of our learners.  We have a designated Health and Safety Officer based at our Station Road building who you can contact at any time for help or advice.  We also provide up to date health and safety information in our Lostsocks newsletter and on this website.  Click here to enter our Health & Safety section, where you will find plenty of useful information, such as forthcoming training events and updates in  current legislation. We have links to important websites, and documents provided by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) can be downloaded and printed for your own use.

Prior to an employer taking on a new student, each setting will undergo a health and safety assessment which will be carried out by a qualified member of our staff, or the Berkshire Training Provider Network. They will look at the policies and procedures you have in place and the visit will last approximately an hour. We are required to carry out this assessment on an annual basis.

Learners receive training and guidance on health and safety throughout their Apprenticeship. All learners must attend a college induction prior to starting their course, which includes a health and safety session. The Health and Safety unit in the NVQ is usually taught in the first term to give learners knowledge and awareness of health and safety in childcare settings and all learners are also required to undergo Paediatric First Aid training within their first term.

At their induction learners are given an Induction Checklist, which they need to complete within their first three weeks at nursery. This highlights and ensures that learners are aware of the principal health and safety issues. Learners are likely to need some help from you in completing the checklist.
