Travel Money and Educational Maintenance Allowance

How to Claim Travel Money

Chiltern Training will cover the travel costs for any learner on the E2E programme or those who are currently unemployed and on the PLA programme. This includes any travel to Chiltern Training and to your placement. Travel claim forms are available from your tutors and should be handed to the Administration Team in reception at morning break. Your money will normally be ready for you to collect by lunch time. You will no longer be eligible for travel money once you are employed or have finished your training programme.

Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) Information

All learners on the E2E programme are eligible for EMA. Learners on the PLA programme must apply for  the EMA allowance and this is means tested. EMA is a reward for attending your course, it is not intended to be a wage. EMA will reward you for attendance, behaviour and    effort; therefore, except in the circumstances detailed below, you will only receive your allowance if you have attended college or your placement for the full five-day week.

You will be paid every week in arrears and we will endeavour to ensure that the money goes into your bank account on Fridays.  It is essential that you have a bank account (not a Post Office or    Building Society account) in your own name, as you cannot be paid by cheque.  Any incorrect     payment amounts need to be  referred to the Learner Support Service.

It is your responsibility to ensure you submit your signed and dated EMA claim form to the administrator in reception each week.  Please be aware that claims are checked and fraudulent behaviour may result in removal from the programme.

Sickness

EMA is intended to reward you for 100% attendance at your course and to help you with the costs incurred by remaining in education.  If you are absent for more than two days due to sickness, you will not be paid for that week. If you are absent for two days or less due to sickness, you must validate your absence with a self-certification form accompanied by a note from your parent or guardian for those days.  If you cannot do so, you will not be paid for that week, as it will be considered an unauthorised absence.  All self-certification forms and parents’ notes must be given to the college by the end of the Thursday of the following week in order for you to get paid the next week.

If you are absent for any reason that has not been authorised in advance, you must inform the college and your placement (if applicable) by 9:30am on that day or, unless in exceptional circumstances, you will not be paid for that week.

You have the right to make an appeal against a decision made not to pay you if you feel that you have been unfairly treated. In order to do so, please speak to the EMA Co-ordinator.  Please refer to the EMA Appeals process for more information.
